As most members will be aware, we will be moving to a new venue from the beginning of next season.  This is to allow the club to continue to grow as the current venue cannot accommodate any more members.
The new venue will be St Barnabas church hall, which is  just off Shinfield Road.

Meetings will continue to be held from 8pm to 10pm on Fridays.
Watch this space for next season's exciting programme!

This was a really enjoyable evening from Mike Owen of Canon (Europe).  Mike presented an interesting overview of the reasons why manufacturers make the decisions they do, and gave us an insight into some of the mind-boggling technology involved in making equipment - no wonder good lenses cost so much!
It was a very professional and well-informed session, without it ever becoming a sales exercise.  Mike even provided the opportunity for members to handle (with longing more than expectation) some of the pro-spec equipment he brought along.  No higher praise can be given than to say that even the Nikon users thought it was a great evening!

Dear members,
Due to the continued expansion of the club, we have outgrown our current venue.
Health & Safety regulations (Fire) do not allow us to grow any further in the current venue, so the committee has been looking around for another venue.

There have been extensive discussions about this, by the committee as well as committees in the past, as the cost of our current venue is extremely cheap and we have been here for a long time. Also, some people are not keen on change, and losing some of our members was a cause for concern. However, we have now come to the point that if we want to continue to thrive as a camera club, we have to move.

So, we have investigated 3 other venues that would still place us near or in “South Reading”, and have decided on the one that was the most suitable for the best price.  The other 2 were rejected due to size and cost.

The new venue as of September is St Barnabas Church Hall, Elm Road, Reading  RG6 5TS. This is just off the Shinfield Road.

We have been able to secure it for Monday nights; that was the only night available.
So when the next season starts, we will meet on Mondays instead of Fridays.
The time of our meeting remains unchanged, from 20:00 till 22:00.

These are the main points about the new venue:
  • This hall offers much more space than the current venue and will give us a new home for some years to come.
  • Storage space is available, and the kitchen is a fabulous size with a large “serving window” into the main space.
  •  The hall is well cared for and has nice wooden flooring and the beams in the high ceiling add to the atmosphere. There is even a stage which we could use if we want to.
  • Parking is ample, with space for about 40 cars right at the back of the church.
  • As a location this is a much “safer” environment with no problems with locals causing damage or mayhem,  or even just causing concerns about walking to/from cars safely.
  • There is another huge benefit: nobody else will be using the hall while we are there.
  • No more noisy singers or kids running amok in the hallways and drowning out our judges/speakers!
If the new venue causes anyone transport problems, then please let one of the committee members know, and we will do our best to help.  Maybe some car-sharing or lifts from/between members can be organised.

For those using public transport there are various buses that go to the new venue, and from the town centre it would take about 25 minutes. The nearest stop is “Shinfield Road, the Maidens” and is a 3 minute walk from the hall.

We hope you will all continue to come to our meetings and look forward to a new start in a new venue.

At our 9 March meeting we welcomed Caroline Colgate ARPS and President of Bracknell Camera Club for the first of her two visits to SRCC this year. Caroline presented '365 and Beyond', a look at her work made during the course of a 365 project (where a photographer has to take and show an image taken every day for a year).

Caroline showed her preparation and thoughts in working through her project and showed some of her work, which all members agreed was of the highest quality. Members were then treated to a show of Caroline’s panel of images which were submitted to the Royal Photographic Society to gain her Associateship. Again, Caroline explained her thoughts and ideas behind her story.   A thoroughly enjoyable evening and we look forward to welcoming Caroline back to South Reading to judge our photograph of the year.

THIS WEEK: 16 March 2012

Yes he’s back……………..

An evening with our very own Ron Povey.  Older members will know what’s to come, our newer members…..well, you'll see.

WELL DONE TO Keith Hull For winning the 2011-12 quarterly print competition.  His score of 216 points averages out at 18 marks per print; a great effort, well done.
Also well done and a BIG thank you to all members who took time to go out and take photographs , mount pictures and enter each phase of this competition.  Over 50 images per evening were submitted , and there was some great quality on show, so thank you and I hope you support the remaining competitions.
The next one is final round of the pdi completion on the 23rd of March.  The competition is still tight so we should be in for a quality night.

Please follow the submission guidelines for PDI entries.

PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR ENTRIES IN BY THIS WEEKEND. IF YOU HAVE EMAILED THEM TO KEITH AND NOT HAD A RECEIPT TO SAY HE HAS RECEIVED THEM, PLEASE CHECK.

This week 9/3/12
'365 and Beyond' presented by Caroline Colgate ARPS.  A show of Caroline's accomplished works, so again a most interesting and inspiring evening ahead.
